Sharing Our Gifts to Build God’s Kingdom in Brooklyn and Queens

Dear Parishioners,

Every Sunday throughout the Diocese of Brooklyn, in 187 parishes similar to Assumption Parish, the faithful of our Diocese come together to celebrate and live our faith in Brooklyn and Queens. But 365 days out of the year, members of our diocesan family and our own parish family are living out the Scriptures in ways that continuously respond and renew us in our faith. These Works are a witness to the Gospel message.

As we journey through this Lenten season, it seems a fitting time for us to reflect on Sharing our Gifts to build God’s Kingdom in Brooklyn and Queens. Each New Year brings many known and unknown challenges to the local Church, and we are tasked to share God’s Love. Through pastoral, charitable and educational services administered compassionately to the people throughout the Diocese, each of us can share gifts that build God’s Kingdom. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the primary vehicle for raising the necessary funds that will allow our community to continue to share their gifts with others.

The Annual Catholic Appeal supports the many important ministries, services, and programs that assist so many in our parishes and throughout the Diocese that rely upon programs that we could not provide for without your support. Please join me–-and the faithful all across the Diocese—in taking a moment to reflect upon the importance of serving Christ as expressed in this year’s theme:

Let us pray that the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal will be successful and allow us to continue
reaching out with the Lord’s love to those in need in our communities, as well as across our entire Diocese. I hope you will join me in continuing a tradition of grateful sacrifice by participating in the 2012 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Dear Parishioners,

Today, we begin the Season of Advent. It is a time of preparation and waiting for the birth of Christ. The Church gives us these weeks of Advent to help us to prepare spiritually. This Advent we are offering the following for your spiritual enrichment:

Sacred Scripture / Faith Sharing - Group Reflection on the Scripture Readings for the Sundays of Advent. Fridays mornings in the Rectory following the 8:00am Mass - December 2, 9, 16 with Sr. Bernadette Sullivan

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament - Wednesday mornings following Mass - 8:30 - 9:30, November 30, December 7, 14, 21.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception - a Holy Day of Obligation, Thursday, December 8th. Mass will be celebrated at 8:00am and 7:30pm.

Anointing of the Sick - Saturday, December 17th during the 5:00pm Mass.

Our Christmas Pageant, Saturday, December 17th at 6:00pm. I invite you to participate fully in this wonderful season of Advent and in the coming of Christ who comes to us - this Christmas - at the end of time - and in our daily lives.

Dear Parishioners,

In this week’s bulletin there is an insert from Catholic Update - “A Walk Through The Mass.” This article discusses the history of the Mass and it is intended to help Catholics understand the meaning of the key ritual of our faith in light of the changes that will take place within our Liturgy the First Sunday of Advent.
Advent begins a new Liturgical Season. The Church celebrates this season as a way of preparing for the coming of our God in human history and at the end of time. This year on the First Sunday of Advent the Church, in the English speaking world, will begin using the “Revised Roman Missal” and within it the fol- lowing:
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal includes:

Norms and guidelines within our Eucharistic Liturgy
Universal norms of the Liturgical Year.
Various Eucharistic Prayers that are read by the priests.

In preparation for these changes the article in this week’s bulletin helps us understand - What is the Mass? It also discusses the Gathering Rite, The Liturgy of the Word and The Liturgy of the Eucharist. We are people of many rituals! Rituals are a part of who we are within our lives of faith! The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy calls us to full, active, conscience participation within every Liturgy. Please take the article home with you as a way of reflection and renewal as we continue to actively participate in the Word of God and the celebration of the Eucharist. During the next few weeks, I will be speaking about the changes within the Liturgy so that we may be ready for the new Liturgical Season and the advent of God among us.
